The future of our young people and our society as a whole demands that molding of the intellectual capacity of all students is central to personal student success. Comprehensive, statewide studies of academic performance of high school student- athletes in North Carolina ov er a three-year period found significant differences between athletes and non-athletes. Five criteria were used, including grade point average, Assistant Coachs Manual rate, discipline referrals, dropout rate and graduation rate, for the 1994-95 academic year. Athletes compared to non-athletes scored significantly higher in all academic and attendance categories and lower in discipline referrals. The survey also showed that the larger the school, the more pronounced the differences in participant and non-participant test scores and attendance results.
